Do you have a budding fashionista, or, a crafty kid who craves making a one-of-a-kind creation??  Our wide array of fiber-arts based craft programs may be just the thing! The Handwork Studio camps will envelop campers with creativity and help campers build on old skills or learn brand new ones! 

This summer we have our always popular Handwork Day Camp, Fashion & Machine, Glamorize Your Doll and Fashion Boot Camp returning to  Sidwell Friends. Memory Quilts, Sew Tech, and our Counselor Assistant Program are returning from last year as well. We are also excited to announce we have added additional NEW and exciting programs to the lineup. Programs in Woodworking and Character Interpretation & Costume Design Creation are now apart of our Summer 2019 classes! At Handwork Day Camp, you’ll find campers sharing stories and laughs while working on a wide array of unique projects. Our goal is to teach useful skills such as, hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, weaving, needle-felting and much more! Campers are always free to express themselves and are enveloped in creativity and fun. Whether refining skills or learning brand new ones, our camp is sure to delight. Glamorize Your Doll Camp®
Glamorize Your Doll Camp®
(Grades 2-6)

Weeks of June 17th & June 24th (1-week sessions)

Get set for some serious fashion fun! Glamorize Your Doll is designed for campers who have the desire to create trendy clothes and accessories for their very own 18" Doll. Patient, kind, and skilled Handwork Studio counselors will teach machine and hand-sewing, embroidery, and other embellishing techniques to allow each campers to craft unique projects for their doll. Camp includes all materials, from sewing machines to fabric. Just bring your own doll* and imagination! Join the fun with Summer 2018's fresh new curriculum with different projects every week!

* Dolls are always welcome but please leave accessories at home.

Fashion & Machine Sewing Camp

Whether you are an aspiring fashion designer or a creative camper looking for new skills, immerse yourself the wonderful world of machine sewing! Designed with older campers in mind, this program is all about choice and creative expression. Campers will be taught how to read and use a wide variety of Simplicity Creative Group patterns, our exclusive pattern partner. In addition to a catalog of over 20 patterns, campers get to choose from dozens and dozens of tempting fabrics to bring style and flare to every creation. There are more than enough options to keep you coming back week after week and year after year*.

Fashion Bootcamp

July 15th - August 2nd (1, 3-Week Session)

From sketching and draping to sewing and modeling, watch your fashion dreams come to life in this 3-week, award-winning program! Aspiring designers will immerse themselves in the fashion world by learning how to execute a collection. A field trip to a local fabric shop will further teach and inspire our budding fashionistas*. As an exciting culmination of the program, campers will have the opportunity to produce a runway show for their family and friends and model their designs. Our talented instructors will patiently guide and mentor each designer through this exciting and challenging process.

*No prior machine sewing experience necessary.

Sew-Tech Camp
Sew-Tech Camp
(Ages 8-14)

Join us this summer for our exciting STEAM based Sew-Tech Camp! This program invites campers to tinker with technology, science, and fibers to develop interactive creations.

Our innovative curriculum blends art and science so that each child will be able to create smart accessories, interactive toys, and light up wearables. Projects will involve the use of LED lights, sound, motors, sewing machines, thread, fabric and more! The possibilities are endless-- whether you are a boy or girl, scientist or artist, this program is designed to boost the appetite of the both left and right brain thinker. All supplies are included, no experience necessary, and projects will change from week to week so that campers are sure to love continuing to work in Sew Tech Camp's Craft Lab!

Memory Quilt Camp
Memory Quilt Camp
(Grades 4-10)

July 22nd-26th (1-week session)

Offered just one week this summer at Sidwell Friends DC campus, Don’t miss the opportunity to make a Memory Quilt, focused on sharing the "story of your life."

This program, led by our wonderful Handwork Studio instructors, will help campers design and sew one large quilt over the course of their week with us. These quilts will be created with your own t-shirts, from theater performances, sports jerseys, volunteering experiences, or any special clothing items you want to include.

Your Memory Quilt is sure to become a favorite cozy family keepsake! Campers will need to provide at least 10-20 tee shirts that can be cut and used in their memory quilt. All other equipment and materials will be provided (batting, sewing machines, thread, additional fabric, etc). No experience is necessary. Sewing skills will be taught in this program.

Woodworking Camp

Can you build it? Of course you can! Learn classic woodworking skills in a hands-on environment. Handwork Studio instructors will guide campers patiently and safely to create a variety of projects while learning to accurately design, measure, saw, and finish their projects properly.   Additionally, campers build on their confidence and love for working with their hands. No experience necessary and projects change week to week so campers can continuously expand on their skills.

New for Summer 2019!  A unique camp designed for anyone interested in the world of costumes, character interpretation, and crafting! Each week this camp will focus on a specific story where you choose the character you want to interpret.  Once your character is chosen, skilled Handwork Studio instructors will guide you through the process of learning fundamental sewing skills, costume design techniques and delve into developing your character. This camp is perfect for anyone who wants to make a one-of-a-kind costume and gain a better understanding of what it takes to be a successful costume designer.  Join us this summer for an amazing experience open to all skill levels.

The Counselor Assistant Program (CAP) is a hands-on leadership program designed for high school students looking to gain professional experiences through working with young children and adults.

Participants in the Handwork Studio CAP will work with campers in any of the other Handwork Studio programs: Handwork Day Camp, Glamorize Your Doll, Sew-Tech Camp, and Machine Sewing. Enhance your leadership skills, develop your sewing and crafting expertise, and gain firsthand experience with the roles and responsibilities of a summer camp counselor. Please note, each session of the Handwork Studio CAP is two weeks.
