Summer camp has been a blast so far, and to be frank, it’s all we really want to talk about. Campers have made countless projects and so many friends. Hands have been busy and the outdoor air has been fresh! To keep things fresh, this month we’re offering a real-time look at Summer Camp 2022. Read along as we explore some of our favorite programs and proudest moments so far!
Sweets, Treats & Eats
How often do you get to taste an accomplishment? We love this program because campers get to truly experience the fruits of their labor. In bake & bake, campers join with their peers for some guided instruction in the kitchen. Campers learn the cause and effect that certain household ingredients have. They learn the importance of measuring, timing, and taking their time to get things just right. The skills that campers learn in this program are invaluable. Not only do they last a lifetime, but they’re immediately transferable to a supervised kitchen near you.
While this program has always been a fan favorite, we’ve found that in recent years its popularity has grown even more. With the influx of baking shows geared toward kids, like Nailed It, Cake Boss, and Is It Cake, more and more campers feel eager to get in the kitchen. While The Handwork Studio is a screen-free environment, we love to see children bringing positive media experiences into the workshop! Go, parents!
Featured Projects of 2022: Cupcakes, Candy Dots & Sugar Cookies!
Design & Build
Artists meet engineers in this program! Design & Build always captivates our attention as much as it activates the imagination of our campers. In this program, campers are given the license to dream up almost any creation they can think of, and then shown the steps they can take to turn their concept into reality. Campers learn about building materials and explore which can be used to achieve certain results. They learn how to measure and basic structural design concepts.
This summer we have junior and senior Design & Build groups, allowing all ages to participate and receive the right type of guidance. While Design & Build has been fun since its inception, this year campers literally turned it into Fun City. We’re not speaking figuratively, check out the picture below.
Featured Projects of 2022: Fun City, Dog World & Pikachu Tower!
Fashion Design
We just love this program. Campers imagine and design an outfit they’d like to wear. Our counselors take the time to teach proper hand and machine sewing techniques. Then, with guidance and supervision, the campers create their design! Campers become expert pattern makers, wardrobe managers, photographers, and more.
While the skills learned are invaluable, a different aspect of the program steals our hearts. At the end of each week, campers Rock the Runway with a fashion show! Campers show off and wear their creations! The absolute confidence and fun that these campers exude astound us weekly. So far this summer we have had 5 fashion shows.

Woodworking
Our woodworkers have been far from board this summer! Woodwork campers engage their imagination to create projects that are sometimes practical, sometimes cute, and always charged with character. In this program, campers have been learning how to measure, cut, sand, finish, hammer, stain, and more! When appropriate, counselors teach proper safety protocols for handy tools like hand drills and hand saws.
Campers have so much fun building their projects that they rarely race to the finish line. We’ve found that campers love certain steps so much that counselors have to nudge them to move on! (Sanding is a surprise favorite this summer.) For parents, you never know what you’re going to get. While you can’t exactly sail away on a toy sailboat, no matter how well it’s constructed, you can sit on a stool. And maybe request three more to complete the set!
Featured Woodworking Projects: Sailboat, Tiny House & A Place to Rest!
Young Publishers
Last but certainly not least, we’d love to shout out our young publishers. These campers bring entire worlds to life with their imaginations. From story ideas to writing, illustrating, and creating a 3D prop, these authors are far from ordinary! Young Publishers stays true to The Handwork Studio values while promoting comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking.
This summer, campers have been thriving with character development and story sequencing, as well as active listening and presentation. They also have been practicing self-reflection in a way that far exceeds their years. Parents, if you’ve yet to sit down with a blank book and dream up a story, give it a whirl! The experience will thrill you, just ask your camper!
Featured Young Publisher Stories: "The Monkey and Spiderman" and "A Narwhal and a Unicorn"
As you can tell, The Handwork Studio Summer Camp has been a blast. We’re so grateful for the memories to date and can’t wait for the dozens more to come over these next weeks. If there are any programs you’d love to learn more about, please reach out and let us know!
Disclaimer: Parents, we thought long and hard before writing this blog. While we want you to experience these magical moments through your kids, we truly feel bad that we don’t have an adult camp for you!
